Asset Replacement

Derby Sewage Treatment Works is a large works serving the city of Derby, with a population equivalent of around 440,000. It is located in an industrial area near Spondon to the East of Derby. Although the original works were constructed in the early 1900s and substantial improvements were made to the works in the 1950s ,1970s and 2000 asset replacement work was required on the ASP’s that CEMA was able to assist with.

Part of this asset replacement was to replace the life expired blowers for the ASP lanes with more modern and more efficient units and to upgrade the ASP PLC and software to the latest Severn Trent control specification. This not only removed obsolete equipment but also provides additional control parameters to bring the site up to date.

Cema Ltd took on the electrical and control updates. This involved disconnection of the old blowers, connection of power and control cables to the new blowers and replacement of the PLC and control software.

The benefits of this project were:

  • 5 years payback based on full project cost.

  • 20 Year design life of plant

  • Strategic backup blowers and not critical number available

  • Old blower 5 critically failed during the project install and could have impacted treatment level

  • Updated ASP control to current standards

  • Remote SCADA control of plant

  • Reduced maintenance – No oil or water maintenance required, only air filters

  • No wearing parts – Efficiency should not reduce over time

  • Reduced noise and more open, spacious environment
